Stomach ulcer or Peptic ulcer is a painful condition caused due to breaks in the stomach lining or small intestine. There are two types of peptic ulcer:
- Gastric ulcers (formed in the stomach lining)
- Intestinal or Duodenal ulcers (formed in the small intestine)
Ulcer is usually developed among women and older people. But recent studies shows that duodenal ulcer is mostly affected among young men while gastric ulcers among old women. A comprehensive Gastric ulcer treatment is provided by Dr.Deepak.S.
Causes of Stomach ulcer:
Ulcer is normally a disorder due to digestive fluid imbalance caused by some bacterial spreading actions in the stomach. No other causes are yet being found for stomach ulcer. Pains due to gastric ulcer usually occurs when the food still remains in the stomach, shortly after eating and that of Duodenal ulcer occurs when the stomach is empty, several hours after eating. These pains also may wake you in the middle of the night.
Certain factors that increases risk of ulcers:
- Increased use of painkillers
- Excessive alcohol drinking
- Usage of cigarette, tobacco, caffeine
- Serious illness affecting to kidney, liver or lungs
- Radiation treatment to the area
Ulcer disease may also spread due to bacterial spread by having close contacts with the affected ones or even through food and water.
Symptoms of Stomach ulcer:
- Burning stomach pains (worse during empty stomach)
- Swelling of body
- Vomiting (sometimes bloody)
- Bloody stools
- Chest pain
- Lack of appetite
- Weight loss
Compared to duodenal ulcers, gastric ulcers often heal slowly. There is a chance for some gastric ulcers not to respond to treatments. These ulcers could be cancer. For such patients, doctors recommend for biopsy before beginning the treatment so that it will make sure whether it is a cancer or not.
Usually treatment for peptic ulcers include only medications like usage of antibiotics to kill bacteria. Some medications stop acid production and coats the stomach lining and thus reduces the chances of occurrence of peptic ulcers. But some bacterias are resistant to antibiotics. If an ulcer is bleeding, or is cancerous, doctors may suggest for surgeries like,
- Partial gastrectomy
Even though most ulcer get healed by their own, it is heavily risky to ignore their warning. If they are not properly treated, they may turn hazardous to life. People affected once, should be careful about their diet and lifestyle.
