All you need to know about Jaundice

Jaundice is a disease that turns skin and eyes yellow. Generally, newborn babies often get it but an adult can also suffer from the disease. If there is a high dose of bilirubin in the blood, it is the possibility of occurring Jaundice. Bilirubin is a yellow-orange substance that is found in red blood cells. When red blood cells die, the liver filters it from the blood stream, but sometimes liver can’t perform its task effectively and builds bilirubin that further can cause skin to look yellow. Jaundice is itself is not a disease but an indication of several possible underlying diseases. Jaundice is the primary indication of start developing blood, liver, or gall bladder problems in the body. Jaundice is rare in adults, but it may occur due to some reasons such as

  • Alcohol-related liver disease

  • Hepatitis

  • Liver infection

  • cirrhosis

  • Pancreatic cancer

  • Blocked bile ducts

  • Gallstones

  • Blood disorders

Jaundice is diagnosed by bilirubin test that measures the substantial amount in the blood. The level of bilirubin will determine the severity of jaundice. High level of bilirubin is an indication of having jaundice.

The tests for detecting jaundice are

  • Blood test to detect bilirubin level

  • Liver function tests

  • Complete blood count test (CBC)

  • Imaging studies such as ultrasounds, CT scans

  • Liver biopsies

The jaundice is diagnosed in newborns with a blood test. The treatment strictly depends on the cause of jaundice. The doctors treat the cause of the jaundice, not the signs. Mostly, jaundice cases can resolve within one to two weeks. Moderate jaundice is treated with phototherapy in the hospital or at home to remove excess amount of bilirubin. The light waves used in phototherapy are absorbed by the skin and blood and change the bilirubin into the waste product to remove from the body. Phototherapy may include the use of a lighted pad which imitates natural sunlight and is placed on the skin. Jaundice generally eliminates when the underlying cause is treated. Jaundice is a sign of a serious illness.
